Interventional atrial occlusion is a guideline-compatible treatment option for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation that cannot be treated with long-term anticoagulation.
Upon suspicion of cardiac arrhythmias and in high-risk patients with no clear cause for a syncope, implantable loop recorders can observe cardiac rhythm and detect and store pathological events for up to three years.
This article summarizes the most important facts for both procedures: indications, implementation and available devices. On the basis of the current study data regarding interventional atrial occlusion and the use of event recorders, current experiences with the two procedures are presented.
