Zusammenfassung
Xysmalobium undulatum (L.) R.Br., Uzara, ist seit Jahrhunderten ein bekanntes Phytopharmakon in der südafrikanischen Stammesmedizin. Die Anwendungsgebiete erstrecken sich von der Behandlung einer Diarrhoe, Spasmen der glatten Muskulatur bis hin zur Wundbehandlung. Das Inhaltsstoffspektrum (u. a. herzwirksame Steroidglykoside vom Cardenolid-Typ, Pregnenolon, Sistosterole, Gerbstoffe, Flavonoide) bietet die Grundlage für das Indikationsspektrum dieser Arzneipflanze. In Deutschland empfiehlt die Kommission E als Indikationsgebiet für die Droge Uzarawurzel (Uzarae radix) lediglich die Anwendung bei unspezifischen, akuten Durchfallerkrankungen.

Uzara, Xysmalobium undulatum, a South African medicinal plant
Xysmalobium undulatum (L.) R. Br., Uzara or milkwort, is a well-known herbal remedy that is used in indigenous South African medicine since centuries. The application areas extend from the treatment of diarrhoea, smooth muscle spasms to wound management. The spectrum of secondary plant products, e. g. cardiac glycosides, pregnenolon, sitosterols, tannins and flavonoids provide the basis for the medicinal use of Uzara root. In Germany the Commission E recommends the drug only as antidiarrhoeal agent for treatment of non-specific acute diarrhoea.
