Response to: Endoscopic Injections of Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Piglet Esophagus Is Safe and Feasible but Did Not Result in any Significant Structural Changes 3 Days after Injection
Thank you for your interest in our project and for this important comment. We completely agree that a longer waiting period needs to be examined. Nonetheless, there is an “acute” effect of Botulinum toxin with reductions of muscle strength,[1] and the aim of our study was to evaluate this. We have also, in previous articles, shown that a significant increase in elongation of the esophagus could be achieved already after 1 hour.[2] We do agree that an investigation after 1 to 2 weeks would be very relevant, and we are conducting further experimental studies to see if that makes a difference. We chose to study the “acute” effect because this might be interesting from a clinical perspective, but we do agree that a waiting period for 1 to 2 weeks to esophageal reconstruction after Botulinum injection should be no major problem if our ongoing studies show a more pronounced effect.
