In 1960, Hong and Schubert reported a case series of percutaneous liver biopsies in children using the Menghini needle.[1] Since that time and despite advances in noninvasive diagnostic measures, liver biopsy (LB) retains an important role in the evaluation of children with liver disease.[2] Traditionally, pediatric liver biopsies were performed by pediatric gastroenterologists without imaging guidance. Today, most liver biopsies in children are performed by interventional radiologists with imaging guidance.[3] This article reviews nontargeted LB in children, both percutaneous and transjugular, with attention to technical considerations for the interventional radiologist.
