Dr. Jose G. Guillem is a colorectal surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at Cornell University Medical College. Jose was born in Portoviejo, Ecuador, and received an M.D. degree from Yale University in New Haven, CT. His general surgery training, which included 2 years of research, was conducted at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He then performed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. In 1991, he joined the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

Dr. Guillem is a major force in colorectal research. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Research Committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation, Jose is a member of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Large Bowel Cancer Organ Site Committee. Dr. Guillem is a member of several other national surgical and colorectal societies and was honored with the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons' Young Researcher's Award in 1995. He is an active researcher and directs many nationally sponsored research projects.

Dr. Guillem has served on the Editorial Boards of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and the International Journal of Colorectal Disease. He is Board certified in General and Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has had a long interest in cancer and has published over 125 peer-reviewed articles and many book chapters on this and other colorectal subjects.

Dr. Guillem maintains a very busy clinical practice in which the management of rectal cancer plays a major role. He educates medical students, surgical residents, and Fellows on a daily basis and also serves as Director of the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Family Registry at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Jose and his wife, Clemencia, live in New York City. When not working, Jose enjoys the company of Clemencia and their three children as well as jogging, art, music, and opera.
