Image-guided percutaneous abdominal and pelvic abscess drainage in children can be
performed successfully with an understanding of the issues unique in the pediatric
population. Most techniques are similar to those learned in adult practice, but the
incidence of underlying diseases differs from that in adults. This article reviews
the basic principles and techniques of percutaneous abscess drainage with special
emphasis on the factors that differ from adults to children. Published experience
with percutaneous abscess drainage in children is summarized, and etiologies of abscesses
in specific sites are reviewed.
