Hydroxyapatite Ceramics for the Treatment of Metaphyseal Defects after Proximal Tibia Fractures: Long-Term Results

Abstract
Between 1992 and 1997 we have treated bone defects in 35 patients with tibial plateau fractures with the bovine hydroxyapatite ceramic Endobon®. The fractures were stabilized by internal plate fixation. In the present paper we report on the long-term results of this method. We found good functional results, with no signs of secondary displacement or complications due to the bone replacement material. Our data show that Endobon® provides good mechanical properties during a long-term follow-up and can be recommended as an alternative to cancellous bone graft for the treatment of tibial plateau fractures.
