Introduction

Colonoscopic practice continues to be a major theme of Digestive Disease Week. At this year’s meeting, radical new colonoscope designs were described for the first time, and there was a particular emphasis on initial evaluations of new optical detection technologies. The quality of colonoscopy, in terms of insertion and examination during withdrawal, was an important topic, as was the increasing potential of therapeutic colonoscopy. Japanese researchers were again seen to be leading the way in pushing back the boundaries of endoscopic polyp detection and early cancer resection.
