Abstract
Ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland is widely used, easily performed resulting
in a high sensitivity but relative low specifity in identifying thyroid disorders.
It is obvious that every third working german reveal diffuse and / or nodular thyroid
disease. The most frequent thyroid pathology is without doubt goitre. The high frequency
of thyroid disorders implies effective diagnostic strategies. Ultrasonography is the
most important imaging modality of the thyroid but laboratory tests, scintigraphy
and cytology results are indicative for final diagnosis.
