Abstract
The immune system consists of various components which act and interact on different levels. The individual components coordinate their functioning via direct contact or via communication networks, e. g. cytokines and chemokines. Immunodeficiencies are most suitable to elucidate the significance of individual components of the immune system. Immunodeficiencies can affect the innate as well as the acquired immunity and often lead to more and sometimes very severe infections. The most abundant immunodeficiency is the functional deficiency of mannose-binding lectin (MBL), affecting 25 percent of the general population. Under certain conditions this deficiency can lead to both an increased risk for infection as well as a favorable course in certain diseases.
