The aim of the present study was to determine the apical microleakage after root canal filling with different sizes of Thermafil® obturators in an in vitro investigation. 50 extracted premolars were used. 10 teeth per group were endodontically prepared to size 40 and obturated with obturators size 40, 35, 30, 25 and 20. Linear dye penetration was measured. Within the limitations of an in vitro investigation it can be concluded that using Thermafil® obturators smaller than 30 might increase the risk of apical leakage. Compared to the control the use of size 35 and 30 showed no significant increase of penetration depth.
