ABSTRACT

This article is a compilation of case histories in which excision of redundant skin is a common surgical theme. Skin laxity is caused by age, sun damage, gross weight fluctuation, body neglect, and morbid obesity. Skin sag may also occur after liposuction. Each case in this article is chosen to illustrate a unique set of body-contouring problems which range from minor to complex. The decision-making process involved in arriving at the solutions to these problems is outlined while technical details and surgical pearls are presented. One surgeon's approach and postoperative results are photographically illustrated. Skin reduction procedures leave lengthy scars, however, patients will accept such scars if the surgical outcome achieves the desired goal and the patient is properly prepared. In certain patients, skin reduction is the only surgical option that will produce success.
