In the past 4 to 5 years, we have discussed ectopic pregnancy, recurrent pregnancy loss, and early embryo development. In the current issue, these topics are again addressed with a different approach, namely a timely update on early pregnancy disorders.

In this month's issue, Dr. Kurt Barnhart has brought together several experts to address these issues.

Dr. Kurt Barnhart is Assistant Dean for Clinical Research Operations, Associate Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Director of Reproductive Research at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an Associate Professor in both the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Epidemiology. He received his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and his M.S.C.E. degree (clinical epidemiology and biostatistics) at the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Dr. Barnhart's current research interests are focused on clinical and epidemiologic aspects of reproduction including ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, infertility, family planning, and prevention of HIV. His research papers have appeared in journals such as Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, Contraception, Obstetrics and Gynecology, theJournal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine. He also has served on numerous NIH Study Sections and on scientific committees of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Barnhart is a member of the editorial boards of Fertility and Sterility and Menopausal Medicine and is an associate editor of Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety.
