Dr. Paul E. Wise is a colon and rectal surgeon and the current Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He received his undergraduate training at the Georgetown University, completing a degree in Chemistry with a minor in German in 1992. Following this, he received his Medical Doctor degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD in 1996. Dr. Wise went on to complete his general surgery residency and research residency at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN in 2003. He completed his Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis/Barnes Jewish Hospital the next year. He served as member of the faculty of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center from 2004 to 2012 as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Surgery. He accepted a faculty position back at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO in 2012, where he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery as well as the Director of the Inherited Colorectal Cancer and Polyposis Registry, in addition to being the aforementioned Program Director of the General Surgery Residency.

Dr. Wise is a busy clinician, and he treats the gamut of benign and malignant anal, rectal, and colonic pathology with a special interest in hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes. As a prolific academic surgeon and an active researcher, he has over 40 peer-reviewed publications and 23 book chapters covering the breadth of colorectal surgery. His particular interest in hereditary colorectal cancer has led to his election to the council and eventually the Presidency (2010–2011) of the Collaborative Group of the Americas (CGA) on Inherited Colorectal Cancer, where he currently serves on the CGA Fund Board, and he was a founding member of the Lynch Syndrome Screening Network, a group dedicated to increasing the identification of patients and their family members who are at risk for Lynch syndrome. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). Additionally, as a fellow of the ASCRS, Dr. Wise has been a member of multiple committees including continuing education (2007–2010), program (2009–2011), public relations (2011–2014), web site (2011–present), and colorectal educational systems template (2013–2015). He also serves on the Continuing Education Committee of the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (2013–present).

Paul is married to Anne Wise, MD—an OB-GYN physician—and they have two wonderful children, Camille (10 years) and Michael (8 years). When not at work, they enjoy spending time with each other, and Paul also enjoys running and traveling.
