Rhythmisch verlaufende Prozesse in lebenden Organismen werden in dem wissenschaftlichen Gebiet der Chronobiologie untersucht. Beim Menschen sind vor allem die 24-Stunden-Rhythmen von großer Bedeutung. Die wichtigste Erkenntnis chronobiologischer Forschung ist, dass durch „innere Uhren“ endogene autonome Rhythmen erzeugt werden.
