Die Obstruktive Schlafapnoe (OSA) ist ein klinisch hoch relevanter Risikofaktor für den ischämischen Schlaganfall. Patienten mit OSA haben ein signifikant erhöhtes Risiko, eine arterielle Hypertonie, Vorhofflimmern, eine koronare Herzerkrankung und eine Herzinsuffizienz zu entwickeln, die allesamt zum ischämischen Schlaganfall prädisponieren. Unabhängig von bekannten kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren erhöht das Vorliegen einer OSA das relative Risiko für den ischämischen Insult erheblich. In der Akutphase nach einem ischämischen Schlaganfall oder einer intrakraniellen Blutung treten schlafbezogene Atmungsstörungen mit hoher Prävalenz auf.
