Der häufigste Grund stationärer Behandlungen in Deutschland ist unverändert die Herzschwäche (Herzinsuffizienz). Diese betrifft nach Analysen des Kompetenzzentrums Herzinsuffizienz ungefähr 3 Millionen Menschen in Deutschland. Frauen leiden häufiger an einer Herzschwäche mit erhaltener systolischer Funktion (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, HF-PEF; diastolische Herzinsuffizienz), Männer häufiger an einer systolischen Herzschwäche (heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, HF-REF; 1).
