Unter Immunonutrition ist der gezielte Einsatz von unterschiedlichen Nährstoffen mit möglichen immunmodulierenden Eigenschaften zu verstehen. Beispielsweise spielen die beiden antioxidativen Spurenelemente Selen und Zink in der Intensivmedizin eine wichtige Rolle. Der indikationsabhängige Bedarf muss adäquat gedeckt und mögliche hohe Verluste durch entsprechende Supplementation frühzeitig ausgeglichen werden, um die Entstehung eines Mangels zu verhindern. Allgemein sollte man mit einer Hochdosisgabe einzelner Spurenelemente jedoch vorsichtig umgehen.
