The reaction of equimolecular amounts of N′-(3-imino-1-alkenyl)hydrazones and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate affords functionalized 2(1H)-pyridinones. Treatment of these compounds with mineral acid or base yields the new 1,7-dioxo-1,2,6, 7-tetrahydropyrido[3,4-d]pyridazines.
