Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder Following Exposure to Cyclophosphamide in Childhood

Summary

With the increasing survival of children with malignancies, the long-term effects of chemotherapies are now becoming important and one of these dreadful long-term complications is the development of a second malignancy. Described here is a case of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder developing 8 years following exposure to cyclophosphamide for the treatment of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Résumé

Avec l'augmentation de la survie des enfants traités pour tumeurs malignes, les effets à long terme de la chimiothérapie deviennent maintenant plus importants et l'une de ces complications à long terme est le développement d'une seconde tumeur maligne. L'auteur décrit le cas d'un carcinome de la vessie développé 8 ans après un traitement par cyclophosphamide pour rhabdomyosarcome embryonnaire.

Resumen

Con el incremento de supervivencia de niños con tumores malignos los efectos de los quimioterápicos a largo plazo empiezan a ser importantes y una de estas complicaciones es el desarrollo de segundos tumores. Describimos un caso de carcinoma de células transicionales de la vejiga que se desarrolló 8 años después de la exposición a ciclofosfamida para el tratamiento de un rabdomiosarcoma embrionario.

Zusammenfassung

Mit der zunehmenden Zahl von Kindern, die maligne Tumoren überleben, steigt die Bedeutung der Nebenwirkungen einer Chemotherapie. Eine dieser besonders problematischen Komplikationen ist die Entstehung von Zweittumoren. In der vorliegenden Kasuistik wird die Entwicklung eines „Transitional cell carcinoms“ der Blase beschrieben, welches 8 Jahre nach der Behandlung des Kindes mit Cyclophosphamid wegen eines embryonalen Rhabdomyosarkoms entstanden ist.
