Significance
Pyrrolopyrrole cyanine fluorophores, such as 2a and 2b, were synthesized in two steps starting from a diketopyrrolopyrrole and various heteroaromatic acetonitrile starting materials. This class of fluorophores displayed absorption and emission bands between 650 and 900 nm, small Stokes’ shifts, high fluorescence quantum yields (0.32-0.69), and high oscillator strengths.
