Significance

Polythiophenes such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxyhiophene) (PEDOT, 1) are considered promising candidates in organic electronics. Nevertheless, they only allow certain substitution patterns in order to remain highly conductive. Replacing the oxygen atoms in PEDOT by sulfur (PEDTT, 2) yields a twisted analogue with a significantly higher band gap. The authors synthesized the sulfur-containing bis-selenophene 7 as well as its polymeric counterpart PEDTS (4) starting from 3,4-dimethoxyselenophene 5. They showed that 7 crystallizes in a planar fashion while the thiophene units in compound 8 are twisted by as much as 45˚ against each other.
