Significance
The authors report the synthesis of a series of hexasubstituted benzene molecules based on a donor-bridge-acceptor design. The results demonstrate in a systematic fashion how donor-acceptor strength, molecular planarity, and conjugation length serve to increase two-photon absorption cross section. The two-photon materials have potential applications ranging from multiphoton imaging to 3D optical storage.
