Significance
An iridium catalyst is shown to be efficient for the direct alkylation of amines with alcohols in water in the absence of a base or any other additives. This reaction represents a convenient alternative for the conventional alkylation process which requires intermediate preparation of activated esters or halides from the alcohols.
