Significance

This new pinacol-Mannich-Michael cascade reaction provides access to diverse heterocyclic structures including spirocycles. Tricyclic compounds can be obtained when R² is a Michael acceptor. Furthermore, the resultant diketoamine is a useful molecule for further functionalization.
