Significance
Pyrene is a very commonly used fluorophore. However, its application as a blue emitter in OLEDs has been limited due to its tendency to aggregate in the solid state. Polymerization of pyrene derivatives is also difficult, probably due to aggregation of the oligomeric species and precipitation out of the polymerization media. Modification of the pyrene scaffold with a tert-butyl group affords a pyrene derivative with a much lower tendency to aggregate in the solid state. The same strategy allows for polymerization to obtain high molecular weight polypyrenes.
