Significance
The first synthesis of directly meso-β doubly linked porphyrins is reported. Several types of these orthogonally oriented porphyrins are described and characterized using X-ray crystallography. In a particularly remarkable example heptameric porphyrin 1 is succinctly assembled using multiple Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.
