Significance
A novel class of polythiophene with a pendant indanedione group was synthesized and found to exhibit a high degree of intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) due to the donor-π-acceptor arrangement in the monomer 1. It is thought that polymers with well-developed ICT interactions could increase the efficiency of solar cells. Additionally, this is the first reported use of triethanolamine for the reduction of oxidized polythiophene, offering a milder alternative to hydrazine.
