Significance

The proline-catalyzed aldol reactions of aromatic aldehydes with different ketones and the influence of optically pure propylene carbonate 2 as solvent were investigated. The configuration of the catalyst and the solvent played a role, since among the possible combinations (R,R) proved to be a matched pair. The incorporation of these matched or mismatched pairs was investigated for various examples of the reported reaction. The products obtained exhibited pronounced differences in yields and enantioselectivities.
