Significance

A conformationally flexible relative (1) of Stoddart’s ‘blue box’ [cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)] is reported. NOESY NMR and X-ray crystal structure analysis show that persistent pseudorotaxanes are formed with mono-tere­phthalate anions.
