Significance

The authors describe the synthesis of a large bite angle (160˚) diphosphane ligand 4 and its chelating properties in complexes with Au(I), Rh(I), Pd(II), and Pt(II). Due to the large distance between the phosphanes the metal cannot adopt an ideal distance to both phosphanes simultaneously, resulting in oscillation between alternately binding to one and the other phosphane more strongly.
