Significance
Phantasmidine, a congener of epibatidine, was isolated from the epidermis of the Ecuadorian poison frog Epipedobates anthonyi in 1992 and was found to interact with β4-containing nicotinic receptors. A total synthesis of phantasmidine was targeted to enable a more detailed pharmacological analysis and structural determination.
