Significance
The efficient and versatile functionalization of fullerenes is an ongoing challenge. The authors describe a copper-catalyzed reaction to achieve aziridinofullerene 1. This compound can then serve as a template in the acid-triggered reaction to install aromatic groups (2), heterocycles (3) or cyclobutene derivatives (4) on the fullerene surface.
