Significance

This work describes the chemical functionalization of graphene oxide via a free radical polymerization (FRP). The authors conduct polymerization reactions in the presence of graphene oxide, thus simultaneously allowing for both the ‘grafting from’ and ‘grafting to’ mechanisms to operate. The resulting two-dimensional materials exhibited excellent solubility (15 mg/mL), high functional group densities and good electrical conductivity (8.4 × 10 S/cm).
