Significance

Aiding the continuous search for novel π-electron systems, here the authors report a one-pot synthesis for three new merocyanine structures. This class of push-pull chromophores is typically synthesized via Knoevenagel condensations or substitution reactions. Accordingly, this one-pot procedure can be selectively varied to yield any of 5, 6 or 7 and could potentially become quite useful.
