Reductive N-Alkylation of Nitroarenes with Alcohols Catalyzed by Au/Fe2O3

Significance
Fe2O3-supported gold nanoparticles (9.1 wt% Au/Fe2O3) were prepared by mixing Fe(NO3)3 ˙9H2O and HAuCl4 ˙4H2O in the presence of Na2CO3 in H2O followed by calcination at 350 ˚C (eq. 1). The nanoparticles catalyzed the reductive N-alkylation of nitroarenes with alcohols to give the corresponding N-monoalkylated or N,N-dialkylated anilines in 81-99% yield (15 examples, eq. 2).
