Significance

(-)-Isatisine A was isolated by Chen and co-workers in 2007 from the leaves of Isatis indigotica Fort. (Cruciferae) with (-)-isatisine A acetonide, an artifact of the isolation process. The latter has shown to be cytotoxic against C8166 cell line and demonstrates anti-HIV-1IIIB activity. It is speculated that (-)-isatisine A exhibits stronger activity than its derivative, although limited amounts of natural material have prevented biological testing.
