Der Impact-Faktor ist volatil und sensibel

Mit seinem Editorial im Deutschen Ärzteblattes (Heft 15) vom 13.04.12 weist Baethge [1] aktuell unter der Überschrift „Nichtperfekter Impact-Faktor“ daraufhin, dass dieser ein gutes Maß für den Einfluss von Zeitschriften ist, aber seine Anwendung beim Vergleich über die Grenzen medizinischer Disziplinen hinweg oder von einzelnen Autoren Vorsicht erfordert. Der erste Teil dieser Aussage entspricht dem Anliegen des Erfinders, dem amerikanischen Bibliometriker Eugene Garfield [5], während der Warnhinweis auf die besondere Popularität des Impact-Faktors in der ministeriellen Forschungsbürokratie und an den Fakultäten abzielt [3]. Aber auch bei der Vergabe von Drittmitteln wird der Impact-Faktor früherer Publikationen eines Antragstellers herangezogen, um die Aussichten für den erfolgreichen Abschluss des Antrags im Falle der Bewilligung abschätzen zu können [28].
