Significance

Combining lipase-catalyzed enzymatic resolution of alcohols with Ru(II)-catalyzed racemization, this paper demonstrates an efficient route towards a variety of secondary alcohols with excellent ee. The resolution is rather insensitive to electronic factors, and in some cases, efficiently resolves secondary alcohols where both side chains are aliphatic. The products of the reaction are secondary acetates.
