Significance
The synthesis and X-ray crystallographic confirmation of the first hexaazaacridine is reported. The synthesis proceeds from readily available starting material via an oxidative double cyclization of a diiminodihydrazine derivative and affords the product in low yield. The hexaazaacridine is air- and thermally (to 400 °C) stable. Calculations of the structure show that the weak antiaromatic 16 π electron ring system has a very low triplet state.
