Significance

Modifications to the structure of the Grubbs" 1st generation alkene metathesis catalyst have led to the development of a ruthenium catalyst that generates an alternating ROMP copolymer between norbornene and cyclooctadiene. Control of the microstructure of polymers is required to obtain polymers of useful properties. The development of sequence-selective alternating ROMP copolymerization catalysts may yield novel elastomers and high-performance plastics.
