Significance

The synthesis of 5H-furoisoindole and pyrrolo[3,4-f]indole heterocycles by a combination of a four-component Ugi and intramolecular oxidative Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions is reported. The scope of the process was further expanded to include the synthesis of thiazole-, benzofuran- and indole-based systems, illustrating its utility in the preparation of diverse and complex heterocycles.
