Significance

An asymmetric aldol reaction of aliphatic donors with aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by a proline-derived diamine-acid bifunctional catalyst is described. The reactions can be run in water and the products were obtained in good yields, diastereoselectivities, and up to 99% enantioselectivity.
