Significance
The authors have found that different imine protecting groups provide different diastereoselectivity in the direct Mannich reaction. The use of their dinuclear zinc catalyst results in good yields and high selectivities for the condensation of α-hydroxy ketones and imines. The use of enolizable imines was tolerated with various alkyl-substituted imine substrates giving good results.
