Significance

A recyclable rhodium-complexed dendron anchored on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles 1 was developed. The hydroformylation reaction of styrene by using catalyst 1 (50 mg) and a 1:1 mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen pressurized to 1000 psi gave the formylated products at complete conversion (branch 2/linear 3 = 48:1). Catalyst 1 was reused five times without any loss of catalytic activity and selectivity (see scheme for details). Eleven examples of the hydroformylation reaction of various olefins were demonstrated (5-100% conversion, branch/linear = 42/1-100/0).
