Significance
The strained silicon-bridged ferrocenophane monomers are photoexcited. As a result, the Fe-Cp bond is selectively weakened as well as the electrophilicity of the Fe is increased. The excited monomers thus undergo ring-opening polymerization in a living fashion under the presence of mild anionic initiators such as Na[C5H5]. The light functions as a switch to turn on and off the polymerization. Due to its living nature, metal-containing block copolymers are easily accessible. This new protocol allows the incorporation of various functional groups, which are normally incompatible with the conventional anionic living-polymerization conditions.
