Significance

The β-carboline alkaloid (S)-Brevicolline is synthesized in six steps from (S)-nicotine. Regioselective ortho-directed lithiation procedures gave a trisubstituted (S)-nicotine derivative which was used in a Suzuki coupling and intramolecular Buchwald amination to complete the synthesis.
