Significance
Bengazole A is isolated from a Jaspis sponge. Its antifungal activity is comparable to that of amphotericin against Candida albicans and it is active against fluconazole-resistant Candida strains. The butane-2,3-diacetal protecting group (structures A and H) plays an important strategic role in the synthesis. For a previous synthesis of bengazole A, see: R. J. Mulder et al. J. Org. Chem. 1999, 64, 4995-4998.
