Significance
This comprehensive study on Ni-catalyzed reductive aldol reactions demonstrates how the outcome of a multi-component reaction can be influenced by the choice of the reducing agent and the Ni catalyst. A mechanism for the Ni(0)-catalyzed reductive aldol reaction is also proposed enlightening the role of the iodobenzene and postulating a Ni(II) intermediate.
