Zn-Catalyzed Synthesis of 1,5-Disubstituted Tetrazoles

Significance
An efficient Zn-triflate-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of 1,5-disubstituted tetrazoles from alkenes, NBS, nitriles and TMSN3 is reported. This multicomponent reaction is thought to proceed via nucleophilic attack by the nitrile on the incipient bromonium ion followed by reaction of the thereby generated nitrilium ion with TMSN3 to produce the 1,5-substituted tetrazoles. A modest range of combinations of alkenes and nitriles were tested.
